Virtual Facility Tours
Have you ever wondered what happens to your trash after you throw it away?
Through LCSWMA’s Facility Virtual Tours Program, you’ll discover how LCSWMA transforms your garbage into a valuable resource that powers the equivalent of 1 in 7 area homes and businesses. Step inside our facilities without leaving home through our Virtual Tours Program, where you can explore our Transfer Station Complex, Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility, Susquehanna Resource Management Complex, and Frey Farm Landfill!
Transfer Station Complex
The Transfer Station Complex (TSC) serves as a waste consolidation hub for garbage haulers picking up recycling and trash in Lancaster County. Learn how the material is sorted, loaded, and transported to our different facilities for final processing and disposal. Not to mention, the TSC is home to two renewable energy projects; solar energy and compressed natural gas.
Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility
The Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility processes 95% of Lancaster County’s municipal solid waste. Here, waste is transformed into clean, renewable energy that powers the equivalent of 30,000 area homes. Additionally, LCSWMA provides 15-20% of its steam to neighbor, Perdue Agribusiness, for use in the facility’s soybean processing operations.
Susquehanna Resource Management Complex
Located in Harrisburg, the SRMC is home to the nation’s first waste-to-energy (WTE) facility. Built in 1972, and retrofitted in 2007, this facility saves landfill capacity and creates clean energy by burning trash. LCSWMA acquired the SRMC in December 2013 to secure future WTE capacity and initiate a regionalized approach to managing municipal solid waste for Lancaster and Dauphin Counties.
Frey Farm Landfill
The Frey Farm Landfill in Conestoga is the final resting place of waste that cannot be recycled or burned for energy. It’s an important part of our Integrated System to protect people and the environment. Look a little closer and you will see more than a landfill! This site is also home to several green energy projects, a historic meeting venue, recreational areas, and more!
